植物に意識はあるのか？

この前、「植物には意識がある」という話をみた。
このような主張をしている分野を植物神経生物学というのだが、ど素人の中の人からするとまあ納得のいく説明だった。
ところがこの「植物には意識がある」という主張を植物生理学の研究チームが論文内で真っ向から否定した。

植物に意識があるとする植物神経生物学では、植物は化学物質を通じて周囲の植物とコミニュケーションをとっているとしている。
一方で、これに反論した上記論文では、脳の構造や機能などの複雑性からして動物以外に意識は持ち得ないとしている。

Based on a survey of the brain anatomy, functional complexity, and behaviors of a broad spectrum of animals, criteria were established for the emergence of consciousness. The only animals that satisfied these criteria were the vertebrates (including fish), arthropods (e.g., insects, crabs), and cephalopods (e.g., octopuses, squids).

そして、Lincoln Taizは脳についてこのように述べている。

“What we’ve seen is that plants and animals evolved very different life strategies. The brain is a very expensive organ, and there's absolutely no advantage to the plant to have a highly developed nervous system.”

動物とは進化の過程が大きく異なりその構造も単純であることから、植物には複雑な神経系を持つメリットがないということでした。
